Going to the dentist isn’t just about getting checked for cavities anymore.

It’s about checking not only your oral health, but your systemic health as well. Many diseases that affect your body show early symptoms in the mouth. Additionally, the bacteria that are present in the mouth can create problems throughout your body.

General dentistry does involve regular oral hygiene visits to allow your dentist and hygienist to assess the overall state of health in your mouth. This involves oral cancer screenings, periodontal evaluations, routine x-rays and the removal of the tartar and stains on your teeth.

General dentistry also involves maintaining your fillings and restorations for a healthy smile. While restorations are meant to be long lasting, they won’t last forever. Sometimes repairs or replacements are needed, and it is our job to help maintain optimal oral health great so that you can keep your teeth and smile for a lifetime.

Even with regular oral hygiene visits emergencies can occur. If you sense a problem with one of your teeth don’t ignore it. Call us immediately. It could be the difference between saving and losing a tooth.

Common Questions

How often should I visit the dentist?

If you are a healthy patient as determined by the dentist, You should visit our practice twice a year. Cleanings and checkups are the cornerstone for establishing good oral health and preventing disease. We strongly recommend scheduling appointments every six months.

During checkups, our dentist will thoroughly examine all the mouth’s structures to look for signs of potential problems. The health of teeth and of all soft tissue will be evaluated along with the density of the jaw. Our dentist will also provide a thorough oral cancer screening. Many people are surprised to learn that dental checkups are incredibly comprehensive and important for enjoying vibrant wellness.

Cleanings, like checkups, are very important for protecting the health of gums and teeth. A cleaning helps prevent the development of periodontal (gum) disease and controls the development of oral bacteria.

Why do I have to have my teeth cleaned regularly?

Some people think that practicing good oral hygiene is enough to protect teeth and gums from the accumulation of plaque and tartar but it isn’t. Despite our best efforts, brushing and flossing are not enough to keep oral bacteria and the harmful substances they contribute to in check.

At any moment, the mouth is home to thousands of bacterial pathogens – some of them good and many of them harmful. As we go throughout the day, bacteria feed when we eat anything that contains sugar or starch. Once bacteria feed, they release acid as a byproduct, which then leads to the formation of plaque. While brushing and flossing removes most plaque formation, some is still left behind. Over time, plaque hardens into tartar, and once plaque becomes tartar, it cannot be removed with flossing or brushing alone. This is why dental cleanings are necessary

How can I prevent cavities?

Preventing cavities involves receiving regular dental care and practicing good oral hygiene. Bacteria and acid attack teeth, and when tooth enamel is permanently damaged, bacteria can form cavities by eating through the dentin surface of teeth.

In addition to having regular cleanings and checkups along with brushing and flossing, patients should control sugar intake to prevent bacterial colonization. Reducing acid intake is important, too, because acid weakens tooth enamel.

What do I do about a toothache?

If you develop a toothache, it is best to call our practice and schedule an appointment right away. In most cases, a toothache is a sign that the tooth is diseased and has an infection that has reached the root. With restorations and root canal therapy, we can greatly improve oral function and a patient’s comfort.

Let our dental experience and artistry help you achieve the smile of your dreams.
