Preventative Dentistry involves taking care of your dental hygiene in order to prevent problems in the future. Preventative dentistry usually refers to regular brushing and flossing, but for preventative dentistry to be successful you must follow all of the advice given to you by the dentist or hygienist.
We recommend patients come in for a cleaning based on a customized plan. During your visits for cleaning the hygienist and dentist can assess what needs to be done to protect your teeth from future problems. Our hygienists look for signs of oral cancer, gum disease, grinding, broken teeth or restorations. Depending upon your needs the dentist will determine what course of treatment is best for you. Preventative dentistry may begin in the office, but must be carried out at home.
Tips:
When left untreated, what starts as localized gum infection and inflammation will result in unhealthy consequences in many organs of the body. Bacteria and mediators of inflammation are carried by the blood and move throughout the body. These destructive materials are recognized to be the root of heart disease, diabetes, stroke, pregnancy complications, kidney disease, certain cancers, as well as many other conditions and medical diseases.
Oftentimes patients say: “I can’t floss my teeth because they bleed when I floss”, or “I can’t floss or have my teeth cleaned because I have cancer, or because I am pregnant….” Actually the reverse is absolutely and unequivocally true. It is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT to floss, brush, clean your teeth well on a daily basis, and seek regular care for preventive dental cleanings, ESPECIALLY if you have ongoing medical conditions and diseases!
