Why Would You Have Cosmetic Dentistry Done

What’s The Difference In Cosmetic Dentistry and General Dentistry?

This is a question that we get asked a lot and people want to know if there is a difference or is there a doctorate of cosmetic dentistry.  The answer is “no.”  There is not a doctorate of cosmetic dentistry.  Everyone  who graduates from dental school does so with the ability to practice general dentistry.  The difference is what each doctor wants to specialize in and then learns through continuing education additional procedures.

General dentistry deals is what most people are familiar with.  It’s the fillings, cleanings and extractions and other general treatments that help to keep a persons mouth and oral health in great condition which is the goal of every dentist.

Cosmetic dentistry goes a little further by working to correct problems that help people have a more attractive smile.  Some people have extreme decay, crowded or very crooked teeth or teeth that have been damaged due to some type of trauma.  A dentist who specializes in cosmetic treatment options works to help correct these issues in order to give the patient a natural looking smile.

What Are Some Cosmetic Dental Treatment Options?

There are several different cosmetic treatment options.  Which ones are used depends on the condition of your teeth and what you want to achieve.  Here is a general list of the most common cosmetic dental procedures you might find in a Dallas, Texas dentist office:

  • Porcelain Veneers
  • Porcelain Crowns
  • Dental Implants
  • Dental Bonding
  • Teeth Whitening
  • Invisalign
  • Six Month Smiles

Each one of these procedures is designed and have the purpose of helping a person correct cosmetic issues with there teeth.  For example:  Veneers can correct stained, crooked or teeth with gaps in them.  Most people don’t think about veneers as being able to correct crooked teeth but they are an option.

Bonding can correct slight imperfections to the teeth like chips or cracks.  Even though bonding is a wonderful solution, it is not as sturdy or strong as other treatment options like veneers or crowns.  That’s why it is important if you have imperfections in your teeth to consult with the dentist ahead of time in order to find out your options for getting the smile you want.

Cosmetic Dentists And Severe Mouth Trauma

From time to time, we have people who come to our office who have experienced some type of severe dental trauma.  It may have been caused by a car accident, a fall or getting hit in the mouth with some type of hard object.  This where a cosmetic dentist really shines.  A cosmetic dentistry is trained to help people who need partial or full mouth restorations due to these issues.  They may not do all the work in the office but they will have a team of people that will help you through the process.  For example:  Someone who has had their teeth knocked out will probably need implants of some sort.  These require the assistance of a doctor that specializes in oral surgery.  Normally they set the implants and the dentist sets the crowns so it is a team effort to get your smile back.

Some people have large amounts of decay for one reason or another.  Not all decay is caused by not taking care of your teeth.  Did you know that some medications can lead to severe tooth decay.  People with diabetes can have problems with their teeth.  If you fall into that category, then there is help for you and your smile and a Dallas, Texas cosmetic dentist  can help.

Here in our office, we are concerned not just about your teeth but your over all health.  There are many links between your oral health and other diseases and physical problems people have.  If you have a smile that needs to be fixed, a cosmetic dentist can help.  Give us a call.
